Amarnath is Considered to be one of the most sacred and popular Hindu pilgrimages of Lord Shiva is in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The temple is situated at an altitude of 3,880 meters in the southern Kashmir Himalayas.
Amarnath Yatra Registration
Amarnath Yatra registration is done by Tourist Offices. No pilgrim is allowed here without registration with the Yatra board first.
Registrations & bookings for Amanath Yatra are to be done with the J&K Govt and can be done from several of the centers like Mumbai, Calcutta, Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Jammu and Srinagar. One can register online too, here http://www.jkbank.net/yatra2008/index.php.
Every registered member is issued a registration-cum-identity slip by the registration authority which they have to carry as an identity slip during the Yatra. Amarnath yatra board also recommends insurance for all pilgrims since journey is a tough one.
When to Visit Amarnath
The Amarnath Yatra is organised by the J &K Govt and it takes place during the months of July to August though the actual dates vary from year to year, depending on weather forecast and the date of Purnima (Raksha Bandhan) in the month of Sharavan.
One has to trek to a height of about 14,500 ft to reach the temple, apart from going on foot; there are also options of taking a pony(khacchar) or palanquin (four people carries you) ride.
Climate in Amarnath
The climatic conditions can vary from rain to snowfall. Sometimes whether changes continuously and temperatures can decrease till about -5 degree C. The yatra is mostly undertaken during the rainy season, the only time when the caves can be accessed.

What to carry during Amarnath Yatra
Due to unpredictable weather conditions, pilgrims are advised to carry woolen garments, rain coats, head umbrellas, walking stick, some dry eatables, torch and some common medicines.
What to wear in Amarnath Yatra
Apart from carrying woolens, the clothes need to be comfortable and suitable to tough conditions & long journeys. Carry minimum luggage and good quality shoes, probably with 1 additional pair.
Health Problems during Amarnath Yatra
Since oxygen is scarce at times, you need to be very physically fit. You also need to provide with a medical certificate of your medical fitness before you undertake the journey. You can also practice deep breathing exercises. People with Asthma & heart problem should stay away.
