Dr. K. Anji Reddy lived his childhood at Tadepalli, a village in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, India. His father was a farmer who grew turmeric. Dr. K. Anji Reddy founded Dr. Reddy’s, a drug and pharmaceutical industry that took up drug discovery research setting the stage for self-reliance and export. He also founded Dr. Reddy’s Research Foundation and Dr. Reddy’s Foundation.
Education & Career of Anji Reddy
K. Anji Reddy did his Bachelors in Science degree from A.C. College at Guntur in 1958 followed by Bachelor of Science - Technology in Pharmaceuticals and Fine Chemicals from the University of Bombay and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from National Chemical Laboratories, Pune in 1969.
He was with the Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited (1969-75), was founder-Managing Director of Uniloids Ltd (1976-80), founder-Managing Director Standard Organics Limited (1980-84) and in 1984 founded Dr. Reddy’s Labs. He turned Dr. Reddy’s into an export-oriented industry in the 1990s and became the first company to take up drug discovery research in India in 1993 becoming innovators.
Dr. Reddy’s was the first non-Japanese Asian pharmaceutical company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange in April 2001. He is also a Director in Diana Hotels Limited, OOO JV Reddy Biomed Limited, Pathenco APS and GAIN Foundation, Switzerland. He is the Founder & Member, Board of Naandi Foundation, a not-for-profit development institution; and Founder-Chairman of Dr. Reddy’s Foundation for Human & Social Development.
Awards and Achievements of Anji Reddy
He is a member in a number of important tasks including Member, Prime Minister’s Task force on pharmaceuticals and knowledge-based industries; Member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Trade & Industry, Government of India; Member, Board of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER); Member of the Board of Governors of the Institute of Chemical Technology, University of Mumbai;
Chairperson, the Governing Body, Hyderabad Eye Research Foundation; and Member, Board of Vision Research Foundation, Chennai.
Dr Reddy was awarded the Hall of Fame award (2005); the Achiever of the Year award by CHEMTECH Foundation (2000); Padma Shri (2001); FAPA-Ishidate Award for Pharmaceutical Research by the Federation of Asian Pharmaceutical Associations (1998); and the Sir PC Ray by the Indian Chemical Manufacturers Association (1984, 1992) amongst many. He was voted Businessman of the Year by India’s leading business magazine Business India in 2001.
