Buddha Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. It is celebrated on full moon night in the month of Baisakh according to the Hindu calendar that usually falls in late April or beginning of May. Buddha Jayanti is the most important festival to Buddhists. Lord Buddha was born in B.C. 560 and died at the age of eighty in B.C. 480.
Buddhism became a very popular religion in the subsequent centuries and even spread abroad. It was on Buddha Jayanti that Buddha attained enlightenment and after preaching the five principles of life and the eight-fold path truth he attained Nirvana and left the mortal world on this day itself.

- The statue of Buddha everywhere receives special attention as people offer incense, flowers, candles and fruits. The famous Banyan tree known as the Bodhi tree for its part in Buddha's enlightenment is also offered garlands and colored flags adorn it. Devotees also sprinkle milk and scented waters on its roots and light rows of lamps and candles around it.
