Commodities trading India

Trading of commodities in India commenced long-time back, but it gained the momentum after the removal of a few restrictions that were embedded by the Government of India. By the approval of the government, a set up of 4 national level commodities exchanges were made that included multi-commodity trading, which further strengthened the trading market of commodities in India.

History of commodities trading India

The trading market of commodities was established before 1970 as a leading market in India. Indeed, in the previous 1970s phase, the commodities' trading markets of India began to lose its effervescence. This happened due to a number of restrictions and regulations from 1970s period, which was introduced by the government into the commodity market, India.

Those restrictions acted as impediments in the pathway of smooth commodity trading functioning. Recently, various restrictions have been eliminated, which were affecting the trading market of commodities in India negatively. So, nowadays, commodities' trading, India has once more started to mature at a swift pace.

Market commissions and commodities trading in India

To encourage the future of commodities trading of India, there formed a Forward Market Commission, which actually standardizes the future business in commodities. There are around 21 commodities exchanges in India, which increases the competitiveness and efficiency of the trading commodity market.

Many among these exchanges are provincial and other exchanges are trade specific and trading offers online facilities of commodities trading in India.

Initiatives by the government

• A plan was approved by the Government of India in 2003, regarding establishment of 4 national level commodities exchanges. The government has also inculcated more services in the permitted commodities list, constructed in the Regulation Act of Forward Contracts.
• The government of India has removed the option of Non-Transferable Specific Delivery Contract from the Regulation Act of Forward Contracts.

Commodity trading in India has a long history. In fact, commodity trading in India started much before it started in many other countries. However, years of foreign rule, droughts and periods of scarcity and Government policies caused the commodity trading in India to diminish. Commodity trading was, however, restarted in India recently.
