The Debonair magazine is a lifestyle magazine for men, originally designed after the Playboy magazine. The magazine started publication from 1971, and was launched by Ashok Row Kavi and Anthony Van Braband. The magazine used to feature everything related to men matters and erotica, the most interesting and popular feature being topless female centerfolds. However, in 2005, under Editor Derek Bose there was a massive reformatting in the magazine and from then onwards it started to be a magazine also for the young.
The magazine now has to its credit the largest read men’s magazine in India. The publication includes men’s lifestyle to pornography, the magazine makes up for the hottest erotica that can be provided to anyone. The magazine is credited to be the oldest of India’s men’s magazine, and its really kept up to its promise of providing high amount of entertainment, this is the reason why the magazine has a readership of 12000. The magazine contains articles on how to mix drinks, what to wear, what after-shave lotions to use, etc.
Problems faced by the magazine
The present avatar of Debonair doesn't seem to feature any topless models and has also toned down its content. But the glory days of the magazine are long over. Actually, the problem faced by the magazine is its lack of adjustment with the traditional Indian lifestyle. The Indian way of living has never promoted erotica, at least not openly, due to which the long term public recognition of the magazine was not possible. The subsequent editors tried their best to improve the image of the magazine, but ultimately one day in order to shed this image they were forced to remove nudity and lessen the erotica in the magazine.
