Deepak Thakur Sonkhla is an Indian Hockey Player. He was born 28th December 1980 in Bhamowal , Hoshiarpur. He plays at the forward position in the Indian Hockey Team. Thakur is nicknamed as “Happy”.

Career of Deepak Thakur

Deepak started playing Hockey at the age of nine. In 1993 he was taken in SAI Sports Promotion Development Area (SPDA) Training center in Patiala. Deepak made his maiden appearance at the Junior World Cup Hockey Tournament in Hobart and made his International debut in 1999 at the Men’s National Team against Germany. In 1999 at the Surjit Memorial Hockey Tournament he was declared as the best player of the tournament. In 1997, he played a series of Test matches in the Under – 21 Indian Hockey Team. In 2000, he played for India in the Four Nation Hockey Tournament which was held in Perth, Australia and helped India to win the tile. In the same year, he scored a totall of 15 goals in eight matches at the Junior Asia Cup Hockey Tournament. He also scored a goal against Argentina at the Sydney Olympics.

In 2001, he scored 5 goals for India in the Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament and helped India to earn Bronze Medal . In the same year, by scoring six field goals, he helped India to win the gold medal at the Prime Minister’s Gold Cup Hockey Tournament, held in Dhaka. He also played test matches against Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand in the same year. He became highest Scorer in the Champion Challenger Cup hockey tournament by scoring six field goals and helped India to win the gold medal. The tournaments was held in Malaysia.
