Delhi Airport or Indira Gandhi International Airport of Delhi is the second busiest airport of India in passenger traffic after Mumbai Airport. It is named after the former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi. The airport code of Delhi Internaitonal Airport is DEL
Location of Delhi Airport
The airport is located at a distance of 16 kms from the city centre. Regular city buses run to and from airport to important points of Delhi. It is also very convenient to take an autorickshaw or taxi to reach the airport. Car parking facility is available and one can reach airport by car as well.
Reaching the international airport at least 3 hours before the flight timings and domestic airport at least 2 hours before flight timings allows enough time to complete all security checking in time.
Options to reach city from airport include pre-paid taxis, meter taxis, autorickshaws, city buses and private cars on rent.
Terminals of Delhi Airport
Delhi Airport has five terminals: One domestic, one international, one for use during Haj time, one for international cargo and another is under construction. Terminal 1 is for domestic travel. Terminals T1A and T1D are for domestic departures and T1C is for domestic arrivals. Terminal 2 is international terminal. There is also a Haj terminal. This terminal is used during Haj season. Terminal 3 is under construction and another terminal is used as international cargo Terminal.
All major international airlines operate from Terminal 2. Arrivals is on the lower level and departures is on the upper level of the terminal building. Domestic Airlines at Delhi Airport
Domestic airlines like Air India and Air India Regional (former Indian Airlines and Alliance Air), Go Air, MDLR Airlines and Jagson Airlines operate from Terminal 1A. Other domestic airlines like Indigo, Kingfisher Airlines, Kingfisher Red, Go Air, Jet Airways, Jetlite, SpiceJet and Paramount Airways operate from Terminal 1D.
Facilities Available at Delhi Airport
Delhi airport has many facilities like ATMs, money exchange counters, child care lounge, lost and found, wheelchairs etc. for the convenience of both international and domestic travelers.
ATMs are easily accessible at terminals and can be used for accessing any bank account. All terminals also have money exchange counters. Delhi airport has a child care lounge with toys and baby cot. Female attendants for babies are also available at Terminal 2 and Terminal 1.
All terminals have excellent food and beverage facilities. All leading brands have their outlets at the airport offering every cuisine to the travelers. Usually food and drinks available at the airport cost higher than their normal prices. For instance you can buy 1 Aloo Parantha for Rs. 100, 1 Sandwich for Rs.60, one Paper Dosa for Rs. 80 and one scoop Ice Cream for Rs. 80.
There is also Wi-fi internet access available at all terminals. Physically challenged travelers can use the wheel chair facility, reserved parking slots, ramps and special rest rooms. Free of charge inter-terminal transfer service is also available for transiting passengers between terminals. Airport also has smoking areas inside Security Hold Area and business lounges. Terminals also have medical facilities 24x7. Minors traveling alone are escorted by and taken care of by the airport and airlines staff till they reach their destination safely. All terminals also have excellent food and beverage facilities.
