Department of law of the Calcutta University was established in the year 1909 under the name of ‘University College of Law’. This law college is situated at important area of Hazra in the city of Kolkata. It was granted the status of Department of Law of the university only in the year 1983. Since its inception it has marveled in the field of legal educations and practices and has also set up several benchmarks for other law colleges in this field. At present it is regarded as one of the most premier law colleges in the country.
Being the main law department of the Calcutta University, it has five other law colleges under it that provide quality legal education tot he students of the region. These colleges include Jogesh Chandra Choudhury Law College, Surendranath Law College, Bikash Bharati Law College, South Calcutta Law College and Kingston George Law College.
Achivements
Department of law of the Calcutta University had made several remarkable achievements in the filed of legal educations and practice. It has a long history of producing several expertise and knowledgeable lawyers who have contributed greatly to the law system of our country. In the India Today-AC Nielsen-ORG Marg Survey of Colleges for 2006-07 the Department of Law of the University was listed at the 22th position amongst various other Law Colleges.
Academic Courses
At present it offers different undergraduate degrees such as LL.B., and LL.B. (H). Besides this, it also offers different masters degree in the legal studies which include LL.M., LL.D. and Ph.D. the courses are amongst the best in the industry.
