The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), Coimbatore is a sub-regional office that was formed for the smooth functioning of the ESI Scheme in the districts like Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, and Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu.
The ESI Scheme
The ESI Scheme is a social security scheme that is self-financed by the employees themselves. Both the contributor and the beneficiary is the employee in this ESI Scheme. The contributions come in handy when the employee is in distress.
The contribution made by the employee gives a comprehensive medical cover to them and it can be used during sickness, maternity and other similar problems. The role of the employers and the state government is also important in implementing the ESI scheme successfully. The employers make sure that the contribution towards the ESI scheme is made regularly by the employees.

Scheme Coverage
The ESI scheme covers the employees of the factories and that not uses power. Those who earn not more than Rs. 10000 per month are brought under this scheme. Factories that uses power and have more than 10 employees should implement this scheme. Non-power establishments that have more than 20 employees should also implement the ESI scheme. This scheme is now expanded to the employees of hotels, shops, restaurants, clubs, cinemas, establishments involved in road motor transport, and newspaper establishments.
Contributions Made
The employees contribute 1.75% of their wages and the employers contribute 4.75% of wages. When it comes to medical expenses the state government contributes 12.5% of the expenses. The funds are pooled in common account called the ESI Fund. This is used for the administrative and other related expenses of the ESI Corporation too.
