HNLU is a Residential University and is sixth in the series of National Law Schools in India. HNLU has been included in the list of the Universities maintained by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 and has been declared fit to receive Central assistance in terms of the rules framed under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956.
Hon'ble Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan , the Chief Justice of India is the Visitor of the University, Hon'ble Mr. Justice Rajeev Gupta , the Chief Justice of High Court of Chattisgarh is the Chancellor and Prof. (Dr.) M.K. Srivastava, is the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

HNLU Raipur Admission Procedure:
B.A.LL.B. (Hons.): Made strictly on the basis of merit as assessed through a Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) conducted for the purpose. CLAT will be an objective type test, with the following break up of marks: a) English - 40 marks b) General Knowledge - 50 marks c) Mathematics - 20 marks d) Legal Aptitude - 40 marks e) Logical Reasoning - 50 marks.
L.L.M.: Selection by the Admission Committee based on assessment of performance at the interview held to determine the aptitude for higher studies and research.
HNLU Raipur Eligiblity:
(a) not completed 20 years of age as on 1st July of the year of admission. (b) passed the Higher Secondary School Examination (10+2) system or an equivalent examination thereto securing in the aggregate not less than 50% of the total marks in the core subjects and English language put together. (c) obtained at least 50% marks in N.E.T. of the total marks.
L.L.M. (a) should have passed LL.B./B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree or its equivalent from a recognized University and should have secured at least 55% of marks in aggregate of the maximum marks prescribed. (b) Age limit for General Candidates is below 30 years as on 1st August of the year of admission. 2 years relaxation for SC/ST Candidates.
Ph.D. (LAW) (i) An applicant holding a Masters Degree in Law from a recognised University with 55% marks in the qualifying examination or a degree approved by Association of Indian Universities. (ii) Any Masters Degree in Law with 55% marks obtained from any of the Universities outside India, and that has been so recognized by the Indian Association of Universities, New Delhi. (iii) For applicants belonging to SC/ST category a relaxation of 5% in marks shall be admissible under eligibility conditions prescribed under sub-clauses 1(i) and (ii).
