Health and Family Welfare Programme in India

  • The general condition of India’s population has improved significantly since the 1990’s. The Average life expectancy at birth has increased from 59.7 years in 1991 to 63.7 years for males and 60.9 to 66.9 years during the same period for females.
  • The National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) was launched in the year 1976 with the goal of reducing prevalence of blindness to 0.3 per cent.
  • Main causes of blindness include Cataract,Refractive Errors, Corneal Blindness, Childhood Blindness, Glaucome, Surgical Complication, Posterior Capsular Opacification, Posterior Segment Disorder, others.
  • Iodine is an essential micro nutrient with an average daily requirement of 100 – 150 micro grams for normal human growth and development. Deficiency of Iodine may cause physical and mental retardation, cretinism, abortions, still – birth, deaf mutism, squint besides goiter.
  • The Govt. is implementing National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme (NIDDCP) formerly known as the National Goiter Control Programme (NGCP) since 1962. The Govt. has banned the sale of non-iodated salt since May 2006.
  • The National Mental Health Programme was started in 1982 with the following objects:
  • To ensure availability and accessibility of minimum mental health care for all in the near foreseeable future, particularly to the most vulnerable sections of the population.
  • To encourage mental health knowledge and skills in general health care and social development.
  • To promote community participation in mental health service development and to stimulate self – help in the community.
  • Currently, the District Mental Health Programme is under implementation in 123 Districts throughout the country.
