1.A voter card today is an identity card for Indian citizens . At many places for documentation purposes voter card is necessary as photo identity and residential proof.
2.A voter card can work as a identity proof for the citizen when the person is exercising the voting rights.
3.A voter identity card helps the citizen in opening bank account, or any such account with the banks and financial institutions.
4.A voter identity card helps the citizen to avail benefits from government programmes and schemes like old age pension, benefit from employment guarantee programmes. All the government department and Panchayats use voter identity card as the card for the eligibility for such schemes.
5.A voter identity card helps while getting compensation for any emergency in case of natural disaster. The emergency team uses this as the identity for the citizens for distributing the relief and rehabilitation packages.
6.A voter identity card helps the law enforcing agency to make a distinction between the Indian citizen and foreign nationals. At times if the foreign nationals engaged in any criminal activity asked by the police to produce voter identity card, if they make claim to be Indian citizen.
7.A Voter Identity card is an effort of Election commission of India to identify the Indian citizens who are eligible for the voting rights. It has largely improved the election process in India.
