Indian Railways Rules For Name Change In E-Tickets

Earlier, changing the name of a passenger in a confirmed reservation ticket was quite difficult and involved a lot of procedure to be followed. This has been made to prevent possible misuse of facility by the agents and brokers, as changing name(s) itself means transfer of authority of travel.Today this can be done quite easily in a matter of few minutes only.

Process of name change in Railway tickets

Any passenger can change his/her name in the E-ticket. For this one has to visit the nearest Railway Reservation Office and furnish the print out of the ‘Electronic Reservation Slip’ together with the photo identify proof of the passenger whose name is required to be change. This facility of name change is being offered to the passenger as per the extant Railway rules of the by the Indian Railways.

The name of the passenger can be changed as per the request of the passenger and can be transferred to any other member of the family which include Father, Mother, sister, Brother, spouse and so on. Similarly, as per the extant Railway rules any passenger who is a railway employee traveling for his duty or any other government authority, can also request for name change in the E-ticket.

The following provisions has been made for resonable cases for both online and counter ticket:

Chief Reservation Supervisor of important stations are authorized by Railway Administration to permit the change of name of a passenger having a seat or berth reserved in his name in the following circumstances namely :

(a) Where the passenger is a Government Servant, proceeding on duty and appropriate authority, makes a request in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure of trains

(b) Where the passenger makes a request in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the train that the reservation made in his name may be transferred to another member of his familymeaning, Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, Son, Daughter, Husband and Wife.

(c) Where the passengers are students of a recognized educational institution and the Head of the institution makes a request in writing 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, that the reservation made in the name of any student be transferred to any other student of the same institute.

(d) Where the passengers are members of a marriage party and any person deemed to be Head of such party makes a request in writing 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train that the reservation made in the name of any member of the marriage party be transferred to any other person.

(e) Where the passengers are a group of cadets of National Cadet Corps (NCC) and any officer who is the head of the group, makes a request in writing at least 24 hours before the departure of the train that the reservation made in the name of any cadet be transferred to any other cadet.

Such request will be granted only once. Regarding item no. (c), (d) and (e), such request for change in excess of 10% of the total strength of group shall not be granted.

Important things to remember

The first thing to remember before going for such name change is that, a passenger can change his name only 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure of his/her train as per extant Railway rules. He can replace his name with name of his blood relations only. Such name change in the E-ticket can be done only once and not more than once.

It is important to note that reasonable argument is necessary to avail such facility (of course, with valid confirmed ticket, Id proof, etc as the case may be) and facility can be easily denied except in case of (a) and (e) as these relate to government service which is considered to be public interests and not personal interests. The final authority of decision rests with CCM (chief commercial manager of the concerned railway zone)
