MEPZ is known as Madras Export Processing Zone of Chennai. It is located in the NH 45 that connects Chennai with Trichy near to Tambaram locality. It is a multi-product zone with products ranging from Rubbers, Textiles, Leather industry, Electronics, Electrical, Garments, and Software etc.
MEPZ Location and objective
MEPZ in Chennai was established in 1984 with the objective to promote direct foreign investments, enhance foreign money transactions and create more employment opportunities in Chennai by the state government. MEPZ was converted to SEZ Special Economic Zone in 2003 to support exports from MEPZ by reducing the operating and trading cost and providing liberal custom procedures.
MEPZ SEZ (Special Economic Zone) offers developed plots and built up office spaces in the lease basis. Tamil Nadu State Government is assuring an uninterrupted electricity service with dedicated 230 KV sub stations for MEPZ. The TWAD board (TamilNadu Water Supply and Drainage) exclusively arranges for water from the palar river to MEPZ area.
A dedicated post office and a telephone exchange are at the service of MEPZ Chennai. Fiber optic lines and ISDN lines are easily acquired in MEPZ with the help of the dedicated Telephone exchange and lines. An Airtel Tower is planned to be installed to expand mobile communication in MEPZ. Banking facilities are included and MEPZ is well connected with many financial institutions of Chennai. Solid Waste management is handled at free of cost in MEPZ by the government.
A Crèche to support the workers’ of MEPZ kids is planned to be developed in the MEPZ Chennai. Continued effort to make the MEPZ Zone environment friendly and a better place to work in Chennai city has been carried out by the State Government. A government dispensary is been operated by the state government to provide health care to the MEPZ employees.
