Marine Engineering & Research Institute (Previously Directorate of Marine Engineering & Training)

Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI) is India’s important national institute for the training of Marine Engineers. It is in fact the oldest and the most reputed marine engineering institute in India. MERI was formerly known as the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET).

About the MERI

MERI is perceived as one of the most elite and premier marine engineering institute in the country. Previously this institute was affiliated to the prestigious Jadavpur University. However, from the year 2009 the all the affiliation of the institute was transferred to the Indian Maritime University (IMU). In the initial stage of its operation MERI used to operate under the aegis of Director General of Shipping. But however, from the year 1983 onwards Indian Government's Ministry of Education and Culture, on the recommendations of the Board of Assessment for Educational Qualifications, decided to recognize this course as equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree course in Marine Engineering.

Besides, MERI is also an ISO-9001 certified institute and it also fully complies with the Indian Government's Right to Information Act.

Education and training programmes

The marine engineering course curriculums are as per the AICTE guidelines. The theory knowledge of the course wares are well complimented with practical trainings as well. M.E.R.I. is equipped with huge Workshop that has adequate equipment, machinery and Steam and Diesel power plants for training and also for meeting the A.I.C.T.E. and I.M.O. standards for practical trainings in the marine engineering. In addition, practical job trainings are provided to the engineering trainees on board of MERI’s own ship.

Besides, this Institution maintains a high standard of paramilitary type of discipline and work performances.
