The Regional Engineering College (REC) Durgapur, in the state of West Bengal was established under an act of parliament for providing training in engineering sciences.The institute was jointly established by the state government of West Bengal and the Government of India.Further the institute was renamed as National Institute of Technology and given the status of Deemed University.
NIT Durgapur Admission Procedure:
Admission to the undergraduate programs is based on the rank obtained in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination [AIEEE] conducted by the Central Board Of Secondary Education (C B S E ) New Delhi.
NIT Durgapur Eligibility:
• The minimum academic qualification for admission through AIEEE is a pass in the final examination of 10+2 (Class XII) or its equivalent referred to as the qualifying examination.
• The number of attempts which the candidate can avail at All India Engineering/Architecture Entrance Examination shall be limited to 03(three) uniformly for all the candidates in consecutive years.

I am a graduate Mechanical Engineer from JU (2010 batch) and believe me more than 80 companies recruited from the engineering faculty during my 4th year. I would not get into high paying low paying companies debate but I gather that your source of information is the net which is brimming with half baked and incomplete placement figures. Also I have met NIT Durgapur students and even work with them but I have never come across arrogant behaviour as you two are showing.There always companies which recruit from only certain colleges like NTPC which recruits from NITs. But do you know companies like ONGC,EIL,Ashok Leyland,Tata Steel,GE,GAIL,Reliance Industries Ltd. recruit from JU. But this does not make it a superior college than NIT. It depends on the performance of its alumni.Please be mature enough to post comments.If I tell you about the IT departments placement in JU you will see that its better than that of many NITs CS department. But all this harping about placements and stuff is a childish game. So grow up and do something well defined rather than wasting precious time in bad mouthing.

NIT Durgapur is better than
NIT Durgapur is better than than any WBJEE college, JU included.
NIT Durgapur does not have any disruptive campus politics or faculty absenteeism (two of the many factors that's causing the decline of JU).
NIT Durgapur has faculty at least as good as JU, if not better.
Infrastructure is better in NIT Durgapur, full thanks to Central Government funding.
Placements are better in NIT Durgapur. NIT Durgapur received 71 companies for 2009-2010, against the approximately 55 comapanies in JU (although JU has more students than NIT Durgapur, which translates to more company per student in NIT Durgapur). There are very few top-paying companies that visited JU but not NIT Durgapur (like Amazon which used to visit NIT Durgapur till the previous year and will probably do so again from the next year). There are a lot to top=paying companies that visit NIT Durgapur but not JU.
So please wake up to today's reality and step out of the ancient Bengali myth of JU being better than NIT Durgapur.

Do you know about the heritage of our colleges CS department.??Its still growing strong with campus recruitments getting better after the slump in the previous year.As you might be projecting about the campus unrest by the students , right after it began Google came and has till now shortlisted more than 10 peopele for telephonic interviws. If JU had the central funding receeived by the NITs it would be better than all of them. If only people from home state can do so much in regard to placemnet then imagine what JU could have done with central status. Soo loser go back to your hostel room cry and then start studying or else as your nature is start hitting the net and again spread this false propaganda of yours. Sheme on you.

It is often irritating to see most West Bengal people say that JU is a top-level institute.
While that was true even a decade ago, that is certainly not true now.
Actually, there several such state-level institutes which are the subject of local legends. People in their states seem to think they are excellent and "just after IITs" (imagine that!!), and often prefer them to NITs. Colleges with similar local reputation also include Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (Uttar Pradesh), Thapar University (Punjab and nearby area), RV College of Engineering and PES Institute of Technology (Karnataka), Anna University and PSG College of Engineering (Tamil Nadu), Coshin University of Science and Technology (Kerala) and many others.
However, the fact remains that these colleges have average infrastructure (compared to most NITs) and a student profile mainly from its home state.
I would suggest all students to choose an NIT over any such state-level college, unless the NIT in question is Patna, Agartala, Raipur or Srinagar.

Yes U will get admission into this college but in streams like chemical, metallurgy, biotech, civil(mech and electrical if lucky).I am 2010 Mech. passout of NIT-Durgapur. Dont take biotech it is a horrible dept. in our college. Your best choice would be civil and chemical . Placements are excellent(except biotech) you can visit the official college website to get placement details (nitdgp.ac.in).All the best!
