NRIs who have accounts in Banks in India are paying the tax already in the form of TDS will be deducted by the banks from your accounts. For these types of income there is no need to file tax return. Sometimes it may be useful for some NRI’s to file a tax return and so they can claim part or most of the tax that is deducted from their Indian bank accounts.
Filing tax requires a PAN number. But it does not mean that once you get a PAN card you must file a tax return every year in India. PAN is a unique identification for every individual citizen of India.
Applying for a PAN card is a quite simple process. But unfortunately mailing of PAN card to overseas be available only for few countries, for which you can refer to the website, http://nriinformation.com.
To apply for the PAN online, Logon to: https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/form49A.html.
Check the bottom part of this page and click on PAN card applying option. Form49A of PAN card application will open. Fill up the details asked for in the form. Before filling you have to read the instructions. The address that is filled should be same as the overseas address mentioned in your bank statement. An Indian address should not be filled.
After filling, you have to check whether all the details are correct and then submit by just clicking the submit option. If the form is submitted correctly, you will be able to see an acknowledgement on the screen. It is advised to take two copies of this acknowledgement. In one of the acknowledgement, your photo should be pasted and it should be then signed with a black.
Also attach the following along with the FORM-49A:
• Bank statement which has the overseas address on it.
• Copy of the passport
• Coloured Photograph
• Bank draft for Rs. 744/- payable at Mumbai- India to “NSDL PAN”.
All the documents should be mailed to Mumbai NSDL, PAN unit.
