National Institute of Ocean Technology

The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) comes under the Ministry of Earth Sciences and was established in the year 1993. A Governing council manages NIOT. This entity was established with the aim of developing technology to harvest the resources, both living and non-living in the Exclusive Economic Zone of India.

Facilities Available at NIOT

NIOT has facilities like acoustic test facility, aquarium, auditorium, hyperbaric test facility, library, and measurement laboratory. The Hyperbaric facility at NIOT is one of the important facilities that assist in its operations. This facility simulates the environment of deep sea with pressure up to 90 MPa. This pressure can be matched to the pressure available at 9000 meters below sea level. The underwater components to be used under sea are tested with this hyperbaric facility before they are deployed in the sea.

NIOT has a good library that has technical information to help the technical community. Modern facilities and resources are available in this library.

Technology Projects of NIOT

National Institute of Ocean Technology works on technology projects like ARGO, Deep Sea Mining, Desalination, Gas Hydrates, Submersibles and other technology services.

The ARGO technology project uses floats to measure the parameters of the sea like temperature and salinity at different depths of the sea. The data got from this is relayed within hours.

The Deep Sea Mining project is aimed at mining the mineral wealth of the sea like polymetallic nodules, hydrothermal deposits, and cobalt rich manganese crust. For its exploration NIOT has been allotted a site by the ISBA.

The Desalination project is aimed at getting fresh water and renewable energy from saline water. Two processes are used for this purpose. One is the Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) and the other is Wave Energy.

The Gas Hydrates project is to explore the sea bed for gas hydrates which could contribute to the energy sector. Gas hydrates are a combination of natural gas and water and they look like ice. They are combustible.

The Submersibles project uses Remotely Operable Vehicles (ROV) for exploration of polymetallic nodules. These ROVs have many tools and sensors that assist in the exploration.
