The purpose of the Officials of water supply department of KMC (Kolkata Municipal Corporation) is to provide adequate water to all areas of Kolkata. The works performed by KMC is divided in following parts:
1.Generation: The main source of water supply is the Hoogly River. From the water is purified at Indira Gandhi water treatment plant (WTP). When the water is purified it is sent to Tallah Pumping station for permanent storage before distributing it.
2.Distribution: The water is distributed in seven zones namely Central, North, South, West, Jadavpur University, SSU/GRU, and Tube Well (TW). All over the city water is distributed by water pipe network.
3.Other services: Officials of Water Supply Department are also the supplier in shipping, supply through tankers, regular use and emergency handling of maintenance works.
