The Paddy Processing Research Centre (PPRC) came into existence in the year 1972. Now this institute is called the Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT) and comes under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries. Initially it was started as an R&D laboratory at Tiruvarur in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu in the year 1968. After it was transformed to PPRC it was under the control of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation. Now it has become IICPT and is under the control of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries from the year 1988. The institute’s main contribution is in the field of post harvest technology for processing food grains.

Divisions in the Institute
The PPRC (IICPT) has six divisions to cater to the different activities. Paddy, Millet, Pulses, Oilseeds, Food Analysis, and Agricultural Engineering are the divisions available in the institute.
Short term courses are offered by the IICPT (PPRC) from time to time to cater to the needs of the Rice mill owners, operators and technicians, students, farmers, self help groups and unemployed youth. The participants of the course will become acquainted with the technologies that are used in processing food grains. Lectures, demonstrations, and practical classes are part of the short term courses offered. Courses like Rice Processing Technology, Operation and Maintenance of Rice Mill Machinery, Grain Processing Technology – Analytical Methods, and Food grain processing and products development are offered. All of these courses are of 3 days duration. You can book your accommodation for the 3 days by remitting Rs. 100. You have to make your own arrangements for food and transport if you are attending the course.
