Ranking Of India In Terms Of Agriculture

1. Agriculture and allied sectors contribute nearly22 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP of India)m while about 65-70 per cent of the population is dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. The agriculture output, depends on monsoon as nearly 60 per cent of area sown is dependent on rainfall.

2. A centrally sponsored Scheme on National Food Security Mission has been launched in the country to enhance the production of rice, wheat and pulses by 10, 8 and 2 million tones respectively by the end of the 11th Plan.

• Pursuant to the resolution adopted on 29/5/2007 by the National Development Council (NDC), to reorient the current agricultural development strategies to meet the rejuvenate agriculture so as to achieve 4% annual growth during the 11th Five Year Plan, a new State Plan Scheme of Additional Central Assistance (ACA) fro agriculture and allied sectors, namely, Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) was launched during 2007-08 with an envisaged outlay of Rs. 25,000 crore for the 11th Five year plan.

3. India accounts for the 10 per cent of the production of fruits and 13.28 per cent of Vegetable production in the World.

• India’s share in the world production of mango is about 39 per cent and of banana is 23 per cent.

• India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of spices and spice products.

• In grapes, India has recorded the highest productivity per unit area in the World.

• India produces 45 per cent of the global production of Cashew. Besides this India is the largest producer, processor, consumer and exporter of Cashew in the world.

• India leads 90 coconut-producing countries in the world and is the 3rd largest producer of coconuts.

4. India is the 3rd largest producer and customer of fertilizers in the World after China and USA.
