Renuka Fair

The Renuka Fair is one of the most popular fair held in Himachal Pradesh on the banks of the river Renuka where the temples of Pashuram and his mother Renuka devi are situated, Renuka Lake is located in the Sirmur District of Himachal Pradesh and is accessible by air the closest airports being Dehra Dun and Chandigarh and by rail the closest railhead being Ambala which is about 100 km away from the lake.

The fair is held to commemorate the immortality of Renuka and her son Pashuram, The legend goes, that Pashuram’s father Jamadagni was fixed on getting rid of his wife Renuka devi, so he gave orders to his son Pashuram to chop his mother head off who followed his orders, on doing so Jamadagni who was very pleased with his sons obedience gave him one wish, so Pashuram wished for his mothers life back and ensured her immortality.

The fair is a three day event held in the first fortnight of November and draws large crowds from all parts of the country to enjoy this colorful event with its Dance, Music, Shopping markets and Exhibitions organized by the locals on the banks of this magnificent river.

Processions of twelve local gods visit the Devi's temple during the fair. On the first day of the event the Idol of Pashuram is taken from Jamu village to the banks of the Giri river on a beautifully decorated silver palanquin, where the other local deties are already present, from here the twelve gods are taken to the site of the fair.
