The Sodal Mela which takes place in the city of Jalandhar is located in the state of Punjab in India. It is a very popular fair that is celebrated in the city on the 14th day of Shukla Paksh in the month of Bhadon according to the Hindu Calender. If you go by the English calendar it falls in the month of September.
History behind the Mela
The History behind this Mela is an infant child named Sodal who graced the place ages ago, had some magical and divine powers in him. On this particular day of the Mela he had supposed to have drowned himself in a pond following the orders of his mother. The pond today is famously known as ‘Sodal Ka Sarowar’. The people from the city of Jalandhar and its surroundings gather at the pond on this day early in the morning to have a holy dip and pay tribute to Baba Sodal. As the event is a day long one the mela is known as ‘Baba Sodal Mela’.
Religious importance for the Sikhs
The Sikhs consider this occasion to be very sacred as it is considered that the child is an infant God. On the Samadhi of Sodal or the place where he died, the devotees decorate it with flowers and garlands. Special rituals are performed by the faithful at this place.
For females the day is very special too. They seek the blessings from the holy water for their children and families. The offerings made to the Samadhi are then distributed to the devotees as ‘Prasad’.
