Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), Chennai

The Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) started with the sole objective to encourage development of software and its exports, to promote designing and development of software technologies and software engineering in India. It came into being in 1995 and started its operation from Chennai.

It started with an industry base of 10 companies and took the number to 1419 by the end of 2006-07. It has to its credit an increase in revenue of software exports from Rs.12.17 Crs. to Rs. 20745 Crs.
In the first three years, it focused on encouraging, nurturing and supporting the small, medium and big companies to take up software developmental activity. After having built up a considerable industry base, it thought of playing a role in HSDC services with centers in cities like Bangalore, Noida & Hyderabad.

It also worked closely with the Central Govt. and the Govt. of Tamil nadu helping them bring up the nine satellite earth stations in big, medium and small scale all across the state. It also was a major player in encouragement and promotion of SMEs in the state of Tamil nadu.

Today the organization has spread its base over 14 districts of Tamil nadu Viz., Coimbatore, Salem, Madurai, Thirunelveli, Vellore, Virudhunagar,Tirupur, Dindgul, Sivakasi, Pollachi, Trichy,Ranipet and Tanjore Erode,.

Besides all this it is also working towards helping organizations like Software Quality Institute (SQI) to quality deployment in software developmental activities. With their consistent interaction with industry and academia they have led to rapid growth of industry.

With such developments and credits to their name they are going further with their efforts. They have set up sub centers at Trichy, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Pondicherry.

STPI- Chennai has set up Earth Station at Pondicherry, with the support of MCIT & Govt. of Pondicherry. Coimbatore being a place of entrepreneurship has very swiftly grown as a second major place for software development, consequent to STPI-Chennai becoming independent. The union territory of Pondicherry, Andaman & Nicobar Islands are being brought under the authority of operation under Chennai. They are trying to support these industries further with the help of more sophisticated technologies like Fiber Optic Connectivity. STPI Chennai plans to undertake this promotional activity at Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
