History of Spencers Plaza

It dated back to the historical heredity of the Spencers Plaza at the time of British rule, between 1863 and 1864, there established the first ever Departmental store by J. W. Spencer and Charles Durant in the subcontinent of India.

Few years later, Eugene Oakshott gave a new paradigm to the departmental store into a novice building, in a unique architecture style of Indian Indo Saracenic. In 1983, the building of Spencer Plaza was damaged in a fire mishap. It was then re-constructed on that very site, at present the mall is among one of the major hangouts for locals of Chennai.
