The Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Southern Region constitutes the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry, headed by the Regional Director, with the headquarters of the SSC Southern Region in Chennai. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Southern Region was established in the year 1977 and comes under the Department of Personnel and Training, Government of India. Group C non-technical recruitment on zonal basis was the main objective of the staff selection commission when it was formed. Now the functions are expanded so that they also recruit Group B posts for the Central Government. Most of the workforces of the Central Government are recruited by the Staff Selection Commission and the personnel recruited by them serve as the interface between the public and the Government thus aiding them in implementing the policies of the Government.

Conducting examinations and interviews for the posts that come under their control are the main functions of the Staff Selection Commission, Southern Region. Exams are conducted in different centres. The candidates who are successful in the examinations and the interviews are posted in their home state itself as far as possible. The examinations aim to test the potential of the candidates apart from what they have achieved. Competitive examinations at the All India level are conducted by the SSC to recruit candidates for the posts.

The posts for which the examinations are conducted by the Staff Selection Commission are, Grade D and C stenographers, Lower Division Clerks, Assistants, Inspectors of Income Tax, Central Excise, Preventive Officers, and Assistant Enforcement Officers, Sub-Inspectors in Delhi Police, CBI and other Central Police Organizations. Various posts in the Comptroller & Auditor General of India like Divisional Accountants, Accountants, and Auditors are also filled by the SSC. Division clerks in various other accounts departments are also recruited by the SSC.
Apart from these, various departmental examinations are also conducted by the SSC for promotions from one grade to another like Group D to LDC, LDC to UDP, and Grade D to C for Stenographers.
The examination centers for SSC examinations in Tamil Nadu includes, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Trichy, Tirunelveli, and Vellore. In Andhra Pradesh Guntur, Rajahmundry, Srikakulam, Kurnool, Warangal, Visakhapatnam, Tirupathi, and Hyderabad are the examination centers. Puducherry is also an examination center for the southern region.
