Tamil Nadu Maritime Academy (TNMA)

Started in the year 1998 by the Government of Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu Maritime Academy (TNMA) gives Maritime Training to young men in India and gives them the opportunity to work in the maritime field. Senior officials of the State Government and the Central Government constitute the governing body of the Tamil Nadu Maritime Academy.

Location

The Tamil Nadu Maritime Academy is located in Thoothukudi which is otherwise called the Pearl City. It is one of the major ports in Tamil Nadu. Thoothukudi is well connected by Rail, Road, and Air with the other cities of India. The airport is 15 kms from the TNMA.

Facilities in TNMA

The Tamil Nadu Maritime Academy has a very good campus that is well furnished with good classrooms. The hostels of TNMA are specially designed with the environment of ship. Ship model are available in the classroom along with laminated displays of machineries, ships, and other nautical equipments. Trainees have access to pantry, and spacious dining hall. Recreation facilities are also available in the TNMA campus. The facilities of Poompuhar Shipping Corporation Ltd are used in practical training for the students to give them the real time experience in maritime.

Courses Offered in TNMA

TNMA offers a Pre-Sea Course for General Purpose Ratings. Candidates who have passed SSLC with minimum of 40% marks in English, Mathematics, and Science can apply for the course. They should not be more than 25 years of ages and should be above 17.5 years of age. The Pre-Sea Course for General Purpose Ratings is for 6 months and costs around Rs. 95000 which includes tuition fees, lodging, and boarding etc. Course commences every January and July. After completing this course the candidates have to complete the All India Exit Examinations conducted by the Board of Examinations for Seafarers. After successful completion of this exam they will be eligible to get the Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC). This certificate is necessary to work in Indian and Foreign going ships.

Apart from the above course, the TNMA conducts short term courses on Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, Proficiency in Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting and Oil Tanker Familiarization.
