Transportation in West Bengal
Railways : The total railway route length in West Bengal is 4499.82 kms. The main railway junctions are Howrah (Kolkata), Asansol, Sealdah, Bandel, Bardhaman, Kharagpur and New Jalpaiguri. Sikkim has no railway network, nearest railhead are Shiliguri (14 kms.) and New jalpaiguri (125 kms.)
Roadways : West Bengal has a road length of 91,970 kms. Including 1898 kms. Of National highways.
Airways : Dum Dum near Kolkata is an international airport. Other airport is at Bagdogra.
Transportation in West Bengal
- West Bengal, the beautiful state extends from the Himalayan foot hills in the north to Bay of Bengal in the South.
- It has always held a coveted position in the Indian history, culture and politics. Bengal was ruled by a powerful kingdom called Gangaridai at the time of Alexanders invasion. Later on, pala dynasty and then the Sena dynasty ruled here.
- The muslim rulers of Delhi took over Bengal from the Sena dynasty and it was ruled by various Muslim rulers and governors till the Mughal period ended in the sixteenth century.
- The advent of British power after Battle of Plassey in 1757, changed the course of history.
- Bengal was partitioned by the British in 1905, for political reasons but a strong movement took place resenting their move and Bengal was reunified in 1911.
Transportation and West Bengal
- Bengal contribution in shaping the modern India is enormous. The great personalities like Ram Mohan Roy, Iswarchndar Vidyasagar, Ramakrishna and Vivekanand etc. spearheaded the social and religious movement.
- Bankimchndra Chatterjee, madusudam Butta, Rabindranath Tagore were ploneers of new literature who brought revolution through their writings.
- A movement to evolve a true art form found its expression in Gananendranath Tagore, Abanindranath Tagore, Nandlal Bose, Jamini Roy and others. Proscenium theatre came into the country with Satyajit Ray’s Pather Pachali.
