Vinod Khosla

Vinod Khosla (born January 28, 1955 at Pune, India) comes from a military family of New Delhi. He is married to Neeru and has four daughters Nina, Anu, and Vani and a son, Neal. . He lives in Woodside, California with his family. He is listed by Forbes magazine as one of three billionaires of Indian origin. He is reputed to be the number 2 Venture Capitalist in the world.

One of the most influential person in the Silicon valley, Vinod is a partner in Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, a venture capital firm.

Education & Career of Vinod Khosla


Vinod did his B.Tech degree at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. After attempting to start his own enterprise which did not take off well, he went to United States to do M.S degree in Biomedical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon. He also took an M B A degree from Stanford University in 1979.

His attempt to establish Daisy Systems, a computer-aided engineering and design company, did not succeed. He co-founded Sun Microsystems with Andreas Bechtolsheim, a German student and a multi millionaire. He left Sun in 1984 and two years later joined Kleiner Perkins which funded Sun.

Important works of Vinod Khosla

Vinod Khosla is involving in financing research to counter global warming. For instance, he supports Brent Contstantz, a Stanford University scientist, in making cement which not only does not release carbon diaoxide but instead absord carbon diaoxide.

He conceived the idea of optimizing SONET for data which resulted in creating a telecommunications-equipment company, Cerent Corp, which Cisco acquired. Juniper Networks was another company that he helped launch besides others like Viant, Lightera and Extreme Networks. A game-maker, 3DO Co, was another company he backed. He is the chairman of two firms, Asera and Corio.
