Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP is the transmission of voice traffic through IP based networks. IP or internet protocol which has been used for data networking at present is also used as voice networking. VoIP is very popular at the present time. It has certain features which are given below:
- It has cost advantages which are better than those of the traditional telephones.
- It can be used across the internet. No extra charges are applicable.
- Using both the data traffic and the voice calls allow the consumers to get rid of one monthly payment.
- The monetary service of this technology for international calling can be enormous.
The VoIP hardware is of 8 different types. The features of each of the VoIP hardware are as follows:
- VoIP Interface Cards for PCs – This card turns the computer into a very capable VoIP telephone. These cards are available of companies like Digium, Voice Tronix, Quicknet etc.
- PC Telephones - These telephones are attached to the computer via the USB port and which allows making telephone calls through the pc.
- VoIP Telephones – Another VoIP hardware is the VoIP telephone which attach directly to the Ethernet network ports.
- VoIP Switches – These switches are a type of device which allows connecting the multiple phone lines to one single Ethernet port and thus enables every telephone to connect to the switch and place VoIP calls.
- VoIP Gateways – The VoIP network is connected by VoIP gateways to the public switched telephone network.
- VoIP Routers – VoIP routers work same as the IP routers by routing the VoIP traffic in the same way.
- VoIP PBX's - These PBXs are high tech low cost hardware like telephone PBXs. Added with the traditional PBX VoIP PBXs manage and configure VoIP network capabilities.
