On May 2005, it started its operation and by the year 2008 it soon came to be known as the second-largest low-cost airline of India. In the year 2007, Skytrax has voted ‘Spicejet Airlines’ as the best low-cost airline in the central and south Asian Region.

Formerly ‘Spicejet Airlines’ was known as Royal Airways and was considered to be a reincarnation of ModiLuft. Ajay Singh along with the Kansagra family has promoted this new airline and within a short while it has made an amazing announcement in which they have decided to offer their service to the people at only Rs.99 for 99 days. After that they came up with a unique promotional scheme at a special price of Rs. 999. It is said that ‘Spicejet Airlines’ wanted to compete with the Indian Railways and its main aim was to lure those passengers that are wants to travel in air conditioned coaches.
Wilbur Ross, a billionaire has made a statement on 15thJuly, 2008 and there he wanted to invest eighty million dollars in a low cost airline. After hearing this statement from Wilbur Ross, the board of directors soon accepted this offer and later on a joint statement was issued by WL Ross & Co and SpiceJet.
