Nurse recruitment in Indian hospitals: A nurse “nurses” a life with care and love

The health care is one sector that is bound to grow manifold in the coming decades across the globe and for this to happen there will be huge requirement for medical professionals like doctors and nurses all over the world. Indian medical practitioners are in great demand abroad and developed countries like Germany,US, UK make up for the paucity of these professionals by hiring Indian doctors and nurses.

Nursing profession is noble and important as it is needed by society. It is highly paid and rewarding. Nursing duties are vast and cover a variety of tasks which varies according to extent of qualification and the working environment. Knowledge, skills, characteristics combined with penchant to serve are the selection criteria for nursing jobs. Nursing jobs can be in any of the following categories. Cardiac nursing, critical care nursing, clinical nurse specialist, intensive care, community health etc.

There is a procedure for recruitment of nurses in India. A BSc (nursing)degree or a diploma in nursing from any of the Indian government-recognised institutes is a pre-requisite. Experience of more than one year is essential. Knowledge of computers with fluency in English would be an added advantage. The recruitment process involves a preliminary screening test with written tests on nursing and English language.

Nurses are employed in rural and urban areas and freshers can also find jobs in AIIMS, Safdarjung hospital, Apollo hospital and Rammanohar hospital etc. Nurses are employed in government run and private hospitals directly if they fulfill the eligibility criteria. However, there is another method of recruitment and that is through placement consultants and recruiting agencies. Agencies employ nurses according to the needs and requirements of the hospitals.

An Indian nurse earns less than 2,000 dollars an year and the nurse-patient ratio is pathetic. India produces more than 30,000 nursing graduates. A number of nursing colleges in India are tying up with hospital groups in America for supplying nurses. Female nurses are preferred over male nurses as the former is more sensitive to a patient’s need but there is no ‘favour’ for female nurses in the selection procedure.

Nurse job is also about teaching where the nurse teacher would teach the freshers entering the field. There are several websites also on nurse requirements. Nursing job is very demanding mentally and physically and a nurse has to put in lengthy hours and duties that ask for talent and understanding of patient’s needs.

This field is fast emerging as one of the most sought after high paid career and will continue to grow ever.
