The seed of IIT Madras was sown during Pt.Jawahar Lal Nehru's visit to Federal Republic of Germany in 1956.
The visit of President of Germany, Dr.Heinrich Luke in 1962 added new dimension to the IIT Madras in the form of Indo German technical assistant programme and Indo German relationship. In 1976 an agreement with the government of France was signed for collaboration and assistance in establishing the Aeronautics Department of the institute.
Prominent in the academic calendar of the Institute is the Institute Convocation Day, the convocation address being delivered usually by the President, Vice-President or Prime Minister of India

Admission Procedure:

Admission to different programmes offered at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) is made on the basis of entrance examinations. The IITM admission council accepts the percentile score/rank obtained by a candidate as a basic standard to call a candidate for Interview/Group Discussion/Counselling, etc. However, the final admission is made on the basis of overall performance of a candidate in entrance examination/group discussion/interview/counseling etc.

Eligiblity:

At least 55% aggregate marks (taking into account all subjects, including languages and subsidiaries, all years combined) for General category candidates and at least 50% aggregate marks (taking into account all subjects, including languages and subsidiaries, all years combined) for SC/ST.

Cutoffs & Aggregate Cutoffs:-

1. Subject-wise cutoffs : Individual subject cutoffs have been determined on the basis that top 80% candidates qualify in each subject. The cutoff marks for the three subjects for General Category are:

2. Aggregate cutoff for the Common Merit List is 172. Aggregate cutoff was determined to declare the required no. of candidates (1.15 times the number of seats available) qualified:

Hostels:-

The IIT Madras offers Hostel facilities to both men and women. The facilities offers in IIT hostels is excellent in terms of living and learning. Each hostel has a mess which functions for its residents during the working semester. During the winter and summer vacations, special messes are run for students who are required to stay in the hostels for pursuing academic, sports or cultural activities.

Campus life:-

The campus of Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) acquires nearly 250 hectares of land full of flora and fauna. The campus has three distinct zones- Academic, Hostel and Residential.

As far as infrastructure is concerned the institute offers incomparable amenities to its students, academicians and fellow members. The institute in pursuit of offering pollution free environment to members uses bicycles and battery powered buses for commuting within the campus. It also offers facilities for sports, health care, shopping, post office and bank etc within the campus.

The extra curricular activities of the students rock the campus. A brief detail of such activities are mentioned here.

Students Activities Center popularly known as SAC is the hub of all indoor sports activities. The inter-hostel events like Choreo Nite and Freshies' Nite are also conducted in the SAC.

The SAC is also the venue for IIT Madras Annual Convocation.

When it comes to 'Out Door' sports, The Inter - IIT sports meet, cricket tournament and Gerhard Fischer & Kokila Rajaiah Tournament (GFKR) are testimony to versatility of the institute.The recreational facilities like Music Club, Astronomy Club, Hiking Club etc make students learn a lot beyond academics.

The festivals like SAARANG and SHAASTRA celebrated every year provide students a chance to explore their creative and technological skills.
